3-27-09

my ipod frowned at me today. i think it might be dead. now i need to decide whether it makes more sense to pay to have it fixed, or to save and buy a new one. this one is four years old, and doesn't have a color screen ... it may be time to move on.

other than this, the day is good. especially after resolving a huge tax headache. whew!

I almost forgot to tell you about this:

HELLO EVERYONE!

On May 2nd, I will be participating in a walk to benefit Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Both of my brothers, Deren and Max, suffer from Ulcerative Colitis. Two years ago Max spent nearly an entire month at Riley when he was 11, trying to survive and narrowly missing surgery. Even his treatments were a thing to be brave about: the steroids had emotional side effects as well as weight gain, and his current treatment is an intravenous medication he has to receive every 2 months, which lowers his immune system and makes him susceptible to almost every cold and flu that passes him by. Both of them are doing much better these days, but it can still be touch and go.

“One in every 200 people suffers daily with digestive diseases. With the support of communities nationwide, Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) has raised much-needed funds that, through research, have brought us closer to a cure. For those who live with these chronic diseases, life is a roller coaster of active and remitting disease. Many live day to day with intense pain, and the threat of long-term hospital stays and multiple surgeries. However, the opportunity to make life more manageable for these patients has never been greater.”

More than 81¢ of every dollar raised goes directly to fund research and patient programs. Please help me in my goal to raise $100 for this cause! Feel free to come to me with any questions you may have. Thanks so much!

If you would like to help, please go to this site to make a donation.

Thanks so much for reading, everyone!

Way to go, Jim!

Jim is a blog friend who goes way back. He lives in Texas, is 60-something years old, and still works for NASA! I think that also makes him one of my coolest friends! One time he and his wife drove through Indianapolis while on a road trip, and they dined with my friend Sarah and I. Fun!

Stay tuned for future blog give-aways. More people need to enter next time ... I know I have readers!

Hello Darlings!

I am announcing the beginning of the PikaLand sale and give away for the month of March!

Go and check it out! I just downloaded their zine, and the participants (I am one of them) look really fun. Hurry and enter the contest by March 15th ... if you are one of two winners, you'll get a free PikaPackage! Otherwise, you can buy a PikaPackage in their store. the proceeds help fund the PikaPackage project, and also go to KIVA, an organization that provides micro loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries.

I have some fun projects coming up in the next few months, which means things are looking up! Winter felt so dire, but I think Brandon and I are going to emerge in the spring to a (hopefully) much more stable existence.

Yesterday Brandon and I were watching Jeopardy, and the question was "What is boric acid?" which Brandon and I both said out loud. But the man who buzzed in said "What is boron?" To which Brandon and I simultaneously said "YOU'RE a Boron!" You know, because it rhymes with Moron. It was just ... one of the funniest things that has happened in awhile, and it needed to be documented. Clearly we're meant for each other; or else we just spend too much time together.

Spring is Coming!

It is almost here ... signs are appearing ...

DSC04461

it was warm last night, and i stood out on the porch in my socks.

it smells good when i go outside ... and the breezes that pass through the house carry the good earthy somewhat-moist scent instead of a bone aching chill.

soon i'll be missing my winter coat instead of being so tired of having to put it on. i'm looking forward to my spring jackets and open toe shoes.

i enjoy having winter when it means we get to have such a jubilant spring.

today i'm trying to refuse turning on the tv. so far it is working ... this morning brandon and i sat together in the living room, me painting, him reading a book about irvington. it was nice to sit together without hearing the sounds of the morning news or bad talk shows.

instead of tv, i'm listening to a autobiography of and read by steve martin, and painting my heart out.

so far today is really good.

a fun weekend!

my pals sally and jill came to indianapolis this weekend to visit. it was a blast! yesterday i took them on a field trip to some fun and interesting thrift stores on the east side, including Audrey's Place (always has a lovely selection of owls) and the Goodwill Outlet. the goodwill outlet is kind of a frightening thing, but something everyone should experience at least once. when we walked in, there were about 30 or so people standing in a line in the middle of the room, all with looks of great anticipation in their eyes ... because coming straight towards them were new bins filled to the brim! (In case you've never been to a goodwill outlet: it's a huuge room filled with probably 3'x5' rolling bins piled with all the stuff that couldn't be sold in the normal retail stores. you pick through everything, and when you're done most of the stuff is sold by the pound. you never know what you will find, and after awhile they take away bins and bring out new ones. i think some people hang out there all day long.) our experience is summed up by sally noticing someone pull out a large knife from a bin ... yikes!

today we got up late, enjoyed a leisurely breakfast, and headed over to the children's museum. i had wonderful company, and we took lots of fun pictures!

the children's museum is a fun time, you should go even if you don't have a child to accompany you!

now the girls have gone back to their respective cities ... and i need to work myself back into the regular swing of things. i have a brand new huge project about to start and one that i need to get the wheels moving on so that it will eventually become a new huge project down the road ... all these secrets! i'm sorry to keep them from you ...
